Finding Real Joy: where
Lilac & Sparrow started
Hey there, I’m Megan! You can usually find me dreaming up a new project with my husband, trying to figure out homeschool with my two girls while my little boy explores the pots and pans cabinet, or excavating a pile of laundry with coffee in my hand. We live in New England and our dog is named Moose.
Cameron and I got married when I was 19, had all 3 babies within 4 years, and changed jobs, homes and churches a handful of times. Lots of transitions! One of the wildest transitions for me was walking through the toddler season for the first time while also caring for a new baby. I was sleep-deprived, overwhelmed because I didn’t yet have the skills I needed to meet the demands of my new normal and trying to remember what the heck the purpose of what I was doing even was. Maybe you’ve had a season like that too. Maybe you’re in one right now.
All I wanted was some sense of being myself again. I ended up labeling what I wanted as “joy”. I wanted to get myself to feel like a good mom / have a smile on my face / maybe have a little motivation to keep cleaning oatmeal off the walls. And that must be joy, right?
Well, no. Not really. I ended up studying out what the Bible says about joy, and found that I would only ever have real, lasting joy when I experienced it as a fruit of the Spirit of God. The Lord met me in the trenches with His truth. He promised to instruct me and teach me in the way I should go (Psalm 32:8) and showed me that His Spirit was creating joy in me even when I couldn’t feel it & He would not stop faithfully working on me (Philippians 1:6). There is joy to be found in the trenches, because we are not alone.
These days I still end up in the trenches! Motherhood with littles is wonderful & wild & always uniquely challenging. I would never ever claim to have any of this figured out—but I am right here alongside you.
I created this space and the Creating Joy course with the hopes of bringing encouragement in the trenches through perspective shifts that center us on the heart of our Creator and practical ideas to help us see and reflect joy in our days.
Community and creativity have fueled my motherhood like nobody’s business, and I know I am not alone in the need for connection with like-minded mamas and a space to use as a creative outlet. I am praying this becomes a place where you feel like you’re cozied up with a cinnamon roll and a good conversation, where your spirit is lifted and you are welcomed into collaboration. There is a place for you here.
Mostly, I just hope you see God’s love for you while you’re here. Thanks for stopping by.
Why the name Lilac & Sparrow?
“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? … And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious…but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Our name was inspired by the above verses from Matthew 6. God cares about lilies. (I like lilacs better.) He feeds little birds. He both displays His heart through them and loves them because He created them. There is nothing too small for our Lord to reflect His goodness through. He shows His care through lilacs and sparrows, sunshine and rain, smiles across the room and mud pie deliveries.
When we let our focus wander into the precious details in our experience of what He has made, we see that He must care for us, too. We are reminded of the privilege of seeking His kingdom and His glory as we rest in His provision. This is my heart’s desire for you. Let’s enjoy the beauty and care of the Lord alongside our children in these days that are so slow and so fast all at the same time. He is here with us through all of it, giving us exactly what we need when we turn our eyes towards Him.

Motherhood is not easy. We are here to link arms with you as we find joy in the trenches, peanut butter on our jeans and all.
Joy is a fruit of the Spirit: an outpouring of confidence, contentment and hope that only comes from submitting to the indwelling presence of God, and a reflection of a depth of pure beauty that we will never fully experience on earth. As the Lord cultivates joy within us, it sustains us and directs our perspective as we live through regular old Tuesdays.
Joy is sparked by the gifts of beauty and sweet detail that the Lord creates, just because He can. I hope that through your time spent here, you are encouraged to notice every sparked joy and create joy right in the middle of the season where you are. ⚘

You were created to create. Yes, you! Even the most mundane work we do as mothers reflects the heart of our Creator as we bring order from chaos.
Motherhood gets really fun when we get creative–making memories, making solutions, and sometimes, making stuff. (Gardens, poems, dinner. Whatever suits your fancy.)
You were uniquely created to love & do unique things, and making room for that creativity in the midst of the little years will fuel your capacity to live out your purpose.

The upward calling of motherhood with joy is a world-changing pursuit and we need to hold each other up along the way. Sharing life with others who share our core values means we will have accountability, encouragement, and the ability to pour those things back into our friends’ lives.
We are here to serve women who are in the midst of in-betweens. It can be so difficult to find friendships where you share the things you are most passionate about, especially in new seasons. Reach out through Instagram or email to be a part of this brand-new community—we can’t wait to see what the Lord does through this space.

You don’t need to wait for the ideal situation before you create a home that reflects heaven. Whether home looks like an itty bitty apartment, a shared space or a dream home, we can always make little shifts that create more joy and beauty right where we are.
I hope you find inspiration here to intentionally create a home that sparks joy for you, your family and all who enter. ⚘
